Mariano Bovi (1757-1813) was a noted engraver, often active during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He specialised in producing delicate engravings, many of which were based on portraits or genre scenes from notable artists of her era. While not as widely documented as some contemporaries, his work exemplifies the refined, detailed linework and subtle shading characteristic of European engravers of the time. Born in Naples; sent by Ferdinand IV to London as pupil of Francesco Bartolozzi in London (1781-1784). Later turned dealer and publisher, working with his brother Rocco Bovi. Specialised in colour prints. His 1802 catalogue describes an exhibition room where "on view for sale" were drawings by Lady Diana Beauclerk, Angelica Kauffman "and other Ladies", Paul Sandby, Zuccarelli, Cipriani and Bartolozzi (qq.v.). Also prints on satin, velvet, muslin and calico to be used to upholster furniture.
